• What is the most urgent challenge our district faces, and what is your plan to address it?

1. Staff Retention & Recruiting substitutes. With the new law that came into affect with retired teachers having the opportunity to return to teaching after retiring is something positive that we can look forward to and seeing if we can recruit any retired educators back in the classroom. The same goes for substitute teachers, being able have some educators return to assist back in the classroom as a part time job if they don't want to go back to the classroom fulltime. We address this by holding public job fairs around the district and being involved by supporting our educators. As school board members we should attend job fairs and promote our district and its employees.

2. Transparency at the district administrative level. Being honest on what's going in the district and disclosing information to the public so administrators, educators and parents are well informed on the day to day basis in our system.

3. Another urgent challenge that our district faces is improving literacy and math skills in our students. One way to address those needs is to adopt some intervention programs for teachers to use and or create more reading and math interventionist positions within the district to work with students.

 

• ¿Cuál es el desafío más urgente que enfrenta nuestro distrito y cuál es su plan para abordarlo?

1. Retención de personal y contratación de suplentes. Con la nueva ley que entró en vigencia de los maestros jubilados que tienen la oportunidad de volver a enseñar después de jubilarse, es algo positivo que podemos esperar y ver si podemos reclutar a algún educador jubilado para que vuelva a las aulas. Lo mismo ocurre con los maestros sustitutos, pudiendo hacer que algunos educadores regresen para ayudar en el salón de clases como un trabajo de medio tiempo si no quieren volver al salón de clases a tiempo completo. Abordamos esto organizando ferias públicas de empleo en todo el distrito y participando apoyando a nuestros educadores. Como miembros de la junta escolar, debemos asistir a las ferias de empleo y promover nuestro distrito y a sus empleados.

 2. Transparencia a nivel administrativo distrital. Ser honesto sobre lo que sucede en el distrito y divulgar información al público para que los administradores, educadores y padres estén bien informados sobre el día a día en nuestro sistema. 

3. Otro desafío urgente que enfrenta nuestro distrito es mejorar las habilidades de lectoescritura y matemáticas en nuestros estudiantes. Una forma de abordar esas necesidades es adoptar algunos programas de intervención para que los maestros los usen o crear más puestos de intervención en lectura y matemáticas dentro del distrito para trabajar con los estudiantes.

• How do you plan to engage with local schools and their students? How have you engaged previously?

i am a parent myself, and I plan to stay involved in her activities as I have been previously. I plan to attend as many public events as possible when the SFPS has announces such events. Make myself visible in the Santa Fe Public schools that I represent and others around the district. It is important for us to make ourselves visible to the staff and be available and have an open door policy to administration and staff. I have been a sports official going on 26 years with the New Mexico Activities Association and have worked with many of the administration and their staff for this amount of time. Many people involved in sports do not know me as John Baca, they know my by my nickname "Babyblue". I got this nickname since I started umpiring at the age of 13 years old.

 

• ¿Cómo planea comprometerse con las escuelas locales y sus estudiantes? ¿Cómo se ha comprometido anteriormente?

Yo también soy padre y planeo seguir involucrado en sus actividades como lo he hecho anteriormente. Planeo asistir a tantos eventos públicos como sea posible cuando el SFPS los anuncie. Hacerme visible en las escuelas públicas de Santa Fe que represento y en otras del distrito. Es importante para nosotros hacernos visibles para el personal y estar disponibles y tener una política de puertas abiertas para la administración y el personal. He sido oficial deportivo durante 26 años con la Asociación de Actividades de Nuevo México y he trabajado con muchos miembros de la administración y su personal durante este tiempo. Muchas personas involucradas en los deportes no me conocen como John Baca, me conocen por mi apodo "Babyblue". Obtuve este apodo desde que comencé a arbitrar a la edad de 13 años.

• What is your plan to ensure that students in our community receive the same quality of education as richer areas, and that teachers and staff have comparable and appropriate levels of education, training, certifications and endorsements?

Students at all schools should have access to the same educational programs regardless of how well their students are performing, because chances are there are still students at high-performing schools that could still benefit from it, especially now after COVID. Part two: Equal access to professional development for all staff, including what's offered at individual school's (i.e., there might be something offered at another school that an educator is interested in or could benefit from, and this might be the same for other staff with PD going on at another school.

 

• ¿Cuál es su plan para garantizar que los estudiantes de nuestra comunidad reciban la misma calidad de educación que las áreas más ricas, y que los maestros y el personal tengan niveles comparables y apropiados de educación, capacitación, certificaciones y respaldos?

Los estudiantes de todas las escuelas deben tener acceso a los mismos programas educativos, independientemente de qué tan bien se desempeñen sus estudiantes, porque es probable que todavía haya estudiantes en escuelas de alto rendimiento que aún podrían beneficiarse, especialmente ahora después de COVID. • Will you support a district wide equity audit that is co-designed by community? If yes, what would you want included in the audit? If no, why not?

I would support any audit that is codesigned by the community. The use of equity audits is a positive move. The utilization of such audits is for performance and planning in such a dynamic multicultural community such as Santa Fe.

• ¿Apoyará una auditoría de equidad en todo el distrito que sea co-diseñada por la comunidad? En caso afirmativo, ¿qué le gustaría que se incluyera en la auditoría? Si no, ¿por qué no?

Apoyaría cualquier auditoría co diseñada por la comunidad. El uso de auditorías de equidad es un movimiento positivo. La utilización de dichas auditorías es para el desempeño y la planificación en una comunidad multicultural tan dinámica como la de Santa Fe.

• What is your plan to ensure that teachers, principals and leadership are representative of the students and families they serve, and that they have the resources and training to fulfill the multicultural mandates of the Martinez Yazzie Law Suit?

My plan is to build relationships with our educators and parents, like I have in sports. Communication is the key in this area. Have an open door policy and listen to their needs. Being available and responsive to all that come into contact with us as members is very important. If we are lacking in one area we need to be proactive and work as a team. As for planning purposes working with our legislators and representatives is the key to making sure we are following the judgement that was filed by by Judge Sarah Singleton.

 

• ¿Cuál es su plan para garantizar que los maestros, los directores y el liderazgo sean representativos de los estudiantes y las familias a las que sirven, y que tengan los recursos y la capacitación para cumplir con los mandatos multiculturales de la demanda legal de Martínez Yazzie?

Mi plan es construir relaciones con los maestros y los padres, como lo he hecho en los deportes. La comunicación es la clave en esta área. Tengo una política de puertas abiertas y de escuchar sus necesidades. Estar disponible y receptivo a todos los que entran en contacto con nosotros como miembros es muy importante. Si nos falta algo en un área, debemos ser proactivos y trabajar en equipo. En cuanto a los propósitos de planificación, trabajar con nuestros legisladores y representantes es la clave para asegurarnos de que estamos siguiendo el fallo que presentó la jueza Sarah Singleton.

• Please explain why we have Bilingual Education and share your plans for enhancing it.

The reason why we have bilingual education in our school system is because Santa Fe has multicultural students attending our schools. We enhance by supporting our newly hired Language & Cultural Director Ms. Stephanie Nieto. Second Santa Fe desperately needs bilingual teachers in our schools, but we are currently hiring or recruiting teachers from other countries to fill these vacancies. If we can attract local educators and offer larger incentives for bilingual teachers that would be a start. Maybe the district can look at assisting educators who want to participate in being a bilingual teacher and pay for classes, training and any materials to help them achieve this goal. We just need to be supportive to those who want to give back to our community.

 

• Por favor explique por qué tenemos educación bilingüe y qué piensa hacer usted para mejorarla. 

La razón por la que tenemos educación bilingüe en nuestro sistema escolar es porque Santa Fe tiene muchos estudiantes multiculturales que asisten a nuestras escuelas. Mejoramos al apoyar a nuestra Directora de Idiomas y Cultura recientemente contratada, la Sra. Stephanie Nieto. Second Santa Fe necesita desesperadamente maestros bilingües en nuestras escuelas, pero actualmente estamos contratando o reclutando maestros de otros países para llenar estas vacantes. Si podemos atraer a educadores locales y ofrecer mayores incentivos para maestros bilingües, eso sería un comienzo. Tal vez el distrito pueda ayudar a los educadores que quieran participar en ser maestros bilingües y pagar las clases, la capacitación y cualquier material que los ayude a lograr este objetivo. Solo necesitamos apoyar a aquellos que quieren retribuir a nuestra comunidad.

• Describe the relationship you'd like to cultivate between our schools and our community?

​The community plays a big role in our schools. We need to become more transparent and utilize other community leaders for assistance in this area. We as members need to be visible and show support for the district we serve and we can accomplish this by attending school and any extra curricular activities.

 

• Describa la relación que quiere cultivar entre el sistema escolar y la comunidad.

La comunidad juega un papel importante en nuestras escuelas. Necesitamos ser más transparentes y utilizar a otros líderes de la comunidad para que nos ayuden en esta área. Nosotros, como miembros, debemos ser visibles y mostrar apoyo al distrito al que servimos y podemos lograr esto asistiendo a la escuela y a cualquier actividad extracurricular.

• We have concerns about the district's plans to bring CYFD and the police into our homes over truancy issues. What do you see as potential negative implications of that plan and what alternatives do you propose?

​The SFPS policy is pretty straight forward when it comes to this. If we can utilize CYFD as a tool I'm all for it, but the administrators and educators should be more involved in this when they see the pattern and it persists. Ask questions and see where we can be of assistance instead of involving law enforcement or CYFD. We need to be proactive on this issue and help the parents and or students to get them back on track, and be available to help or assist when needed.

• Nos preocupan los planes del distrito para meter a CYFD ya la policía a nuestros hogares por problemas de ausentismo escolar. ¿Cuáles ve como posibles implicaciones negativas de ese plan y qué alternativas propone?

La política de SFPS es bastante directa cuando se trata de esto. Si podemos utilizar a CYFD como una herramienta, estoy totalmente de acuerdo, pero los administradores y educadores deberían involucrarse más en esto cuando ven el patrón y persiste. Haga preguntas y vea dónde podemos ser de ayuda en lugar de involucrar a la policía o CYFD. Necesitamos ser proactivos en este tema y ayudar a los padres o estudiantes a volver a encarrilarse, y estar disponibles para ayudar o ayudar cuando sea necesario.

• Many students now in 1st and 2nd grades missed out on acquiring basic classroom and learning skills. What ideas do you have to help them catch up? What role might community organizations play?

​Kids need more time and support that teachers can't always offer in the classroom without veering to far from what they're required to teach at grade level. Educators could use more support staff like interventionists to work with students below grade level. We should also make sure that these staff members are not taken away from the classroom and students work on tasks to support the office and building administration. It would also be more helpful to have more volunteers to work with individuals with individuals or small groups during or after the school day. We need to look at partnering with community organizations to offer tutoring opportunities for our youth. Another avenue to look at if we could create a program where district coordinator can train our volunteers to help in classroom with reading fluency and math. This keeps the teacher engaged on the classroom and the teacher does not have to spend time preparing the volunteer. If we get more volunteers we should assist those willing to help by covering costs of fingerprints and background check, I think many times the current process turns volunteers away.

 

• Muchos estudiantes que ahora están en 1.° y 2.° grado no pudieron adquirir las habilidades básicas de aprendizaje y del salón de clases. ¿Qué ideas tienes para ayudarlos a ponerse al día? ¿Qué papel podrían jugar las organizaciones comunitarias?

Los niños necesitan más tiempo y apoyo que los maestros no siempre pueden ofrecer sin desviarse demasiado de lo que deben enseñar. Los educadores podrían usar más personal de apoyo como intervencionistas para trabajar con estudiantes por debajo del nivel de su grado. También debemos asegurarnos de que estos miembros del personal no sean sacados del salón de clases y que los estudiantes trabajen en tareas para apoyar la oficina y la administración del edificio. También sería más útil tener más voluntarios para trabajar con individuos o grupos pequeños durante o después del día escolar. Necesitamos considerar asociarnos con organizaciones comunitarias para ofrecer oportunidades de tutoría para nuestra juventud. Otra vía para considerar si pudiéramos crear un programa donde el coordinador del distrito pueda capacitar a nuestros voluntarios para ayudar en el salón de clases con fluidez en lectura y matemáticas. Esto mantiene al maestro involucrado en el salón de clases y el maestro no tiene que dedicar tiempo a preparar al voluntario. Si conseguimos.

• Will you commit to meeting with our South Side Community Council on a monthly basis?

I will commit to any meeting that involved promoting the Santa Fe Public School system.
