Summer is here, and with it, new life, new growth, and new ways to root ourselves in what matters. 

In a moment where so much around us feels heavy – where injustice is visible across borders and close to home – we’re reminded that caring for our communities, the land, and each other is part of how we can stand in the grief of this moment, resist, and build something better.   

At Earth Care, we know that the struggles we face here are deeply connected to those our communities are facing across the country and the world. That’s why we’re committed to building power from the ground up – through food justice, economic justice, and everyday practices of community care.  

From our planting and land restoration at La Milpa, to our work to help local business owners access vital funding through our partnership with the Regional Development Corporation, we’re creating spaces where people can show up, care for one another, and find strength in community together. 

From Tree Planting to Irrigation, La Milpa Is Building More Than A Garden

Summer is here, and with it, new life at La Milpa. Over the past few weeks, we’ve begun to plant our food forest and build our community garden, through a two-part workshop series, where we gathered with our community to dig our hands into the soil, share knowledge, and continue growing a space rooted in care and resistance. 

During Part 1 of our workshop, our families and dozens of community members came together with the amazing stewards of Tree New Mexico to plant nearly 75 trees and shrubs in a powerful act of care, restoration, and love for the land.  

Part 2 consisted of an Irrigation Installation Workshop led by incredible experts from Anthropopulus. During this workshop, community members learned how to construct an efficient irrigation system – and rolled up their sleeves to do it – helping to ensure that every new tree and shrub we planted can thrive. 

The care, knowledge, and hard work that our community poured into the planting and irrigation process is a big step toward our dream of creating more green and communal spaces that are accessible to our families living in Santa Fe’s Southside – a community that has seen continued underinvestment in the resources our families need to thrive.

The core of a milpa is nearly impossible to define because the philosophies and strategies behind it vary according to each region and culture – and that’s the beauty of it. Still, across its many forms, there are shared principles that guide many milpa strategies:  

• A respect for native ecosystems – observing, listening, and co-creating with the land, plants, animals, and insects as an approach to regenerative food cultivation.

• Local community connection and networks that offer and receive support from the milpa, creating a mutually replenishing system of collective efforts.

• Recognition of our spiritual connection and practices to the Earth, plants, animals, insects, and each other, where all work comes from.

With these three principles in mind, it was vital to begin the planting with a blessing of the land. We were honored to be joined by the talented dancers of Danza Tonantzin de Analco, who helped us call in blessings and honor our ancestors. As La Milpa continues to rehabilitate the land, which has been compacted and filled with waste over the years, we recognize and carry with us the sacredness that the soil, air, water, sun, and the representations of the six directions continue to offer us as great guides in nourishment. 

With the trees and shrubs now rooted in the soil and irrigation in place, we’re shifting our focus to continue building our water catchment and rain harvesting with the Mother Nature Center and the Santa Fe Watershed Association. We’ve begun forming a water basin to feed into the line of fruit trees, which came to life beautifully after the recent rains. As we continue to learn, build efficient water usage systems, and maintain the growth of all our greens, we’ll be calling in more helping hands soon – be sure to stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to help us grow something beautiful. 

 

This work isn’t just about growing food or creating green spaces – it’s about remembering. Remembering our ultimate origins from the fertile soils of Mother Earth. That we are not separate from one another – no matter the identities we carry or have been given. And that in the face of systems that threaten everything we love, community care is a form of resistance. 

All of our struggles across the globe are woven together- from the recent protests in L.A., to the ongoing violence of I.C.E. kidnappings, to the unimaginable devastation being unleashed on our friends in Palestine. La Milpa stands in solidarity with all who are rising up to protect each other and fight for a future grounded in justice and care – in Los Angeles, across the country, and around the world.

La Milpa invites all who are witnessing these heartbreaking injustices and feeling the pull to act to begin right here – as we gather, grow, and organize together. You don’t have to travel far to show support for these movements, and what each of us has to offer will look different. But building strong networks of mutual care, community, and collective action is one of our most powerful tools against every form of oppression.  

The work we do at La Milpa is rooted in that understanding. It exists because of the same oppressive systems perpetuating the harm that we’re bearing witness to now. We gather to address the deep disinvestment in our Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities. We grow, teach, connect, and support in direct resistance to systems that try to keep us disempowered by limiting our access to food, severing our relationship with the land, and disrupting our connection to one another.

To work with or through anger is to respond with movement – and if you’re feeling the call to do something, La Milpa invites you to come move and build with us. In the weeks ahead, we will be announcing regular work party days for the public to participate in and adding new opportunities to get involved to the calendar on our website. 

At La Milpa, we move from a place deep within our hearts – and even through the chaos of this year, everyone who has joined us has brought that same energy and love. Everything La Milpa has built has been made possible by the community that surrounds us. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped us begin this food forest, and to our partners Tree New Mexico, Anthropopulus, The Mother Nature Center, and United Way of North Central New Mexico for their continued support. Local Businesses Encouraged to Apply for Microgrants (With Help From Earth Care!)

At Earth Care, we know that environmental justice and economic justice go hand in hand. That’s why we’re partnering with the Regional Development Corporation to help local business owners obtain up to $3,000 through RDF’s Microgrant Fund! 

This money can be used to purchase needed equipment, consulting services and specialized software as long as they’re necessary business needs that can help you grow.  

✅ Who’s eligible to apply?

You can apply if your business:

• Has been in operation for at least one year 

• Sell products or offer services in exchange for money

• Is located in one of these counties: Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, Mora, Taos, San Miguel, Northern Sandoval, or Los Alamos

In addition, you’ll also need:

• A valid business license

• Tax ID number (CRS)

• A bank account dedicated to the business 

  
  

🛍️ What can you buy? 

This grant is designed to help you invest in tools and resources that help your business improve and grow, including:  

📱 A computer, printer, or payment system

🛠️ Construction, cooking, or cleaning tools

🍳 Kitchen appliances such as a blender or stove to sell food

👩‍💻 Professional services to create a website or purchase specialized software (subscriptions not included)

‍⚖️ Legal advice or consulting for your business

⚙️ Any type of machine that helps you produce more, even if you already have one and need another 

🚫  What can’t the funds cover?

You cannot use the money to pay for:

• Rent

• Electricity, water, gas, or other utilities

• Wages

• Products for resale (inventory)

• Tobacco, gambling, or any illegal activity

You cannot use this money to buy more products for resale, such as food, clothing, or cosmetics. The idea is that you buy something that helps you improve your business, such as a tool, a machine, or a computer.

Ha llegado el verano y, con él, la nueva vida, el nuevo crecimiento y nuevas formas de arraigarnos en lo que importa.  

En un momento en el que muchas cosas a nuestro alrededor se sienten pesadas - donde la injusticia es visible a través de las fronteras y cerca de casa - se nos recuerda que el cuidado de nuestras comunidades, la tierra, y entre sí es parte de cómo podemos estar en el dolor de este momento, resistir, y construir algo mejor.   

En Earth Care sabemos que las luchas a las que nos enfrentamos aquí están profundamente relacionadas con las que afrontan nuestras comunidades en todo el país y en todo el mundo. Por eso estamos comprometidos con la construcción de poder desde la base, a través de la justicia alimentaria, la justicia económica y las prácticas cotidianas de cuidado de la comunidad. 

Desde nuestra plantación y restauración de tierras en La Milpa, hasta nuestro trabajo para ayudar a los propietarios de negocios locales a obtener recursos vitales a través de nuestra asociación con la Corporación de Desarrollo Regional, estamos creando espacios donde la gente pueda manifestarse, cuidarse unos a otros y encontrar juntos la fuerza de la comunidad.

Desde La Plantación De Árboles Hasta El Riego, La Milpa Está Construyendo Algo Más Que Un Jardín

El verano está aquí, y con él, la nueva vida en La Milpa. En las últimas semanas, hemos comenzado a plantar nuestro bosque de alimentos y construir nuestro jardín comunitario, por medio de una serie de talleres de dos partes, donde nos reunimos con nuestra comunidad para cavar nuestras manos en el suelo, compartir conocimientos, y seguir creciendo un espacio arraigado en el cuidado y la resistencia. 

Durante la Primera Parte  de nuestro taller, nuestras familias y docenas de miembros de la comunidad se reunieron con los increíbles administradores de Tree New Mexico para plantar cerca de 75 árboles y arbustos en un poderoso acto de cuidado, restauración y amor por la tierra.  

La Segunda Parte consistió en un Taller de Instalación de Sistemas de Riego dirigido por los increíbles expertos de Anthropopulus. Durante este taller, los miembros de la comunidad aprendieron a construir un sistema de riego eficiente - y se subieron las mangas para hacerlo - ayudando a asegurar que cada nuevo árbol y arbusto que plantamos pueda prosperar.  

El cuidado, el conocimiento y el trabajo duro que nuestra comunidad vertió en el proceso de plantación y riego es un gran paso hacia nuestro sueño de crear más espacios verdes y comunales que sean accesibles a nuestras familias que viven en el Sur de Santa Fe - una comunidad que ha visto continuamente una falta de inversión en los recursos que nuestras familias necesitan para prosperar.

Es casi imposible definir el núcleo de una milpa porque las filosofías y estrategias que la sustentan varían según cada región y cultura, y de ahí viene su belleza. Sin embargo, en todas sus formas, hay principios comunes que guían muchas estrategias milpa:  

• El respeto por los ecosistemas autóctonos: observar, escuchar y co-crear con la tierra, las plantas, los animales y los insectos como enfoque para el cultivo regenerativo de alimentos.

• Conexión con la comunidad local y redes que ofrecen y reciben apoyo de la milpa, creando un sistema de reposición mutua de esfuerzos colectivos.

• Reconocimiento de nuestra conexión y prácticas espirituales con la Tierra, las plantas, los animales, los insectos y entre nosotros, de donde proviene todo el trabajo.

Con estos tres principios en mente, era vital comenzar la plantación con una bendición de la tierra. Tuvimos el honor de que se nos unieran los talentosos bailarines de la Danza Tonantzin de Analco, quienes nos ayudaron a invocar bendiciones y honrar a nuestros ancestros.

A medida que La Milpa continúa rehabilitando la tierra, que se ha compactado y llenado de desechos a lo largo de los años, reconocemos y llevamos con nosotros lo sagrado que el suelo, el aire, el agua, el sol y las representaciones de las seis direcciones continúan ofreciéndonos como grandes guías en la alimentación.

Cuando la plantación de árboles y arbustos llegó a su fin, nuestra comunidad se unió a la celebración con un almuerzo y una banda de mariachis. 

Con los árboles y arbustos ya arraigados en el suelo y el riego en su sitio, estamos cambiando nuestro enfoque para seguir construyendo nuestra captación de agua y recolección de lluvia con el Mother Nature Center y la Santa Fe Watershed Association. Hemos comenzado a formar una cuenca de agua para alimentar los árboles frutales, que cobró vida maravillosamente después de las recientes lluvias. Mientras continuamos aprendiendo, construyendo sistemas eficientes de uso del agua y manteniendo el crecimiento de todos nuestros vegetales, pronto estaremos llamando a más manos amistosas - asegúrate de estar atento a las próximas oportunidades para ayudarnos a cultivar algo hermoso. 

Este trabajo no consiste sólo en cultivar alimentos o crear espacios verdes, sino también en recordar. Recordar nuestros orígenes en los suelos fértiles de la Madre Tierra. Que no estamos separados los unos de los otros, independientemente de las identidades que llevemos o nos hayan dado. Y que frente a los sistemas que amenazan todo lo que amamos, el cuidado comunitario es una forma de resistencia.  Todas nuestras luchas en todo el mundo están entrelazadas: desde las recientes protestas en Los Ángeles, pasando por la violencia actual de los secuestros de ICE (inmigración), hasta la inimaginable devastación que se está desatando sobre nuestros amigos en Palestina. La Milpa se solidariza con todos los que se están levantando para protegerse mutuamente y luchar por un futuro basado en la justicia y el cuidado, en Los Ángeles, en todo el país y en todo el mundo.

La Milpa invita a todos los que son testigos de estas desgarradoras injusticias y sienten la necesidad de actuar a que empiecen aquí mismo, reuniéndose, creciendo y organizándose juntos. No tienes que viajar lejos para mostrar tu apoyo a estos movimientos, y lo que cada uno de nosotros tiene que ofrecer será diferente. Pero crear redes sólidas de atención mutua, comunidad y acción colectiva es una de nuestras herramientas más poderosas contra cualquier forma de opresión. 

El corazón del trabajo que hacemos en La Milpa está arraigado en ese entendimiento. Existe debido a los mismos sistemas opresivos que perpetúan el daño del que ahora somos testigos. Nos reunimos para abordar la profunda desinversión en nuestras comunidades hispanohablantes e inmigrantes. Cultivamos, enseñamos, conectamos y apoyamos en resistencia directa a los sistemas que intentan mantenernos desempoderados limitando nuestro acceso a los alimentos, cortando nuestra relación con la tierra e interrumpiendo nuestra conexión mutua. 

Trabajar con o a través de la ira es responder con movimiento - y si sientes la llamada a hacer algo, La Milpa te invita a venir a moverte y construir con nosotros. En las próximas semanas, anunciaremos jornadas de trabajo en las que podrá participar el público y añadiremos nuevas oportunidades de participación al calendario de nuestra página web. 

En La Milpa, nos movemos desde un lugar profundo dentro de nuestros corazones - e incluso a través del caos de este año, todos los que se han unido a nosotros han traído esa misma energía y amor. Todo lo que La Milpa ha construido ha sido posible gracias a la comunidad que nos rodea. Estamos profundamente agradecidos con todos los que nos ayudaron a iniciar este bosque de alimentos, y a nuestros socios Tree New Mexico, Anthropopulus, The Mother Nature Center, y United Way of North Central New Mexico por su apoyo continuo. En Earth Care, sabemos que la justicia medioambiental y la justicia económica van de la mano. Por eso nos hemos asociado con la Corporación de Desarrollo Regional para ayudar a los propietarios de negocios locales a obtener hasta 3,000 dólares a través del Fondo de Microsubsidios del RDF.  

Este dinero puede ser utilizado para la compra de equipos necesarios, servicios de consultoría y software especializado, siempre y cuando sean las necesidades de negocio necesarias que pueden ayudarle a crecer.

¿Quién puede aplicar?

• Tengan un año o más en operación

• Vendan productos u ofrezcan servicios a cambio de dinero

• Estén ubicados en uno de estos condados: Santa Fe, Río Arriba, Mora, Taos, San Miguel, Northern Sandoval o Los Alamos

Además, también necesitará:

• Una licencia comercial válida

• Número de identificación fiscal (CRS)

• Una cuenta bancaria dedicada al negocio
